The first edition of FEM – The Suitcase was held in la Bisbal d’Empordà in the province of Girona, Spain on March 8th 2004.
Curated by Denys Blacker and Anet van de Elzen, the festival was programmed to coincide with International Women’s Day and to be part of the celebrations that take place in the town every year on this day. Seven artists were asked to bring all they needed for their performance with them in a suitcase. The artists were given a room each in the medieval castle in the centre of town and the performances took place simultaneously. The public were able to move freely between the spaces. The participating artists were: Anet van de Elzen (NL), Esther Ferrer (ES/FR), Denys Blacker (GB/CAT), Mariëlle Videler (NL), Anne Seagrave (IRL), Jessie Kleemann (GL), Kirsten Norrie (GB).
The festival was funded by the Elsa Peretti Foundation with the collaboration of the Ajuntament de la Bisbal d’Empordà.
